BROCKPORT, NY - On Friday, the Cougars (7-0-0, 3-0-0) faced off against the Brockport Golden Eagles (1-6-0, 0-3-0) on the road. Chatham won an action-packed game 5-4 in overtime to extend their winning streak to seven.
In the first period, the Golden Eagles put early pressure on the undefeated Cougars. Brockport opened the scoring halfway through the first frame. Not fazed, the Cougars quickly responded 49 seconds later to even the score 1-1. Senior Nick Cyprian scored his 4th goal of the season, which was assisted by Jake LaRusso. The Cougars took charge of the game, controlling much of the play in the latter half of the period. They had a chance late in the frame on the power play, but we were unable to convert.
In the second period, the game slowed as defense stole the show. The teams battled back and forth, but neither would blink first. Cougars Goaltender Nik Trakakis kept the Golden Eagles at bay, stopping all 12 shots he faced.
The offensive side of play stole the show in the third period, turning the game from a defensive showcase to a memorable turning point in both teams' seasons. The Cougars broke the deadlock four minutes into the frame. Junior Michael Roby scored his 5th of the season, assisted by Nicholas Babbie. The Golden Eagles responded at the seven-minute mark to even the game at 2-2. The Brockport offensive onslaught continued, scoring two more unanswered goals 35 seconds apart to push their lead to 4-2. The Cougars roared back after Nick Cyprian scored his 2nd of the game on the power play, from Jake LaRusso and Caden Pendo, to get within one. The Cougars' continued gritty effort was rewarded as in the dying seconds of the game, Roby tied it up at fours with a net front drive, set up by Caden Pendo. As the clock struck zero, the teams would be heading to 3-on-3 overtime, where players lay it on the line in front of nervous, yet hopeful, fans.
In overtime, both teams regrouped and took chances wherever possible. Staying steady, Trakakis made a clean save to keep the score tied. Moments later, Nick Babbie caused a turnover and set up Roby, who completed his first career hat trick, leading the Cougars to victory.
Chatham's resilient effort was highlighted by Cyprian's 25th career multi-point game. LaRusso and Pendo both added two assists, extending both of their point streaks.
The teams will be back at it tomorrow, November 21st. Puck drop is slated for 3 pm up north in Brockport, NY.
