CORTLAND, NY — The St. John Fisher men's ice hockey team earned a 6–3 road victory over SUNY Cortland on Saturday evening, moving to 3–1–0 in its inaugural season. Fisher scored twice in the first period, added three more in the second, and closed out the win with an empty-netter in the third.
How It Happened
Fisher opened the scoring just 1:23 into the game when Michael Peluso converted on a setup from Sam Ciappa with an additional assist from Charlie Robinson. The Cardinals doubled their lead at 8:25 of the first on the power play as Ciappa scored with help from Elijah Devereaux.
Early in the second period, Fisher extended the lead to 3–0 with a shorthanded goal from Gavin Brandon at 2:31, assisted by Mitchell Ferras and Robinson. Cortland answered with a power-play goal at 3:25 to make it 3–1.
Fisher responded quickly. At 5:50, Ferras scored at even strength on assists from Ciappa and Leyton Pettypiece, restoring the three-goal advantage. Cortland added its second power-play goal at 11:45 to cut it to 4–2, but Fisher capitalized on a power play of its own at 15:44 when Brendan Merriman scored on a feed from Ian Emery.
Cortland made it 5–3 at 12:20 of the third period before Fisher sealed the game with an empty-net goal from Emery at 17:47, assisted by Brandon.
Goaltender Dylan Grover finished with 33 saves in the victory.
