PITTSBURGH, PA - On Saturday, the Chatham University Cougars (7-11-1) played their second game of the weekend against the Nazareth Golden Flyers (6-11-2). For the second day in a row, the Cougars battled back from an early deficit and won in overtime, this time by a score of 4-3.
In the first period, the Cougars fell behind quickly when the Golden Flyers got on the board less than five minutes into the game. The Cougars answered back to tie the score at one goal a piece when Milan Cermak scored on the Evan Mitchell assist. The Golden Flyers regained the lead heading into the locker room when they scored with less than a minute-and-a-half left in the period.
In the second period, the Cougars came out on the offensive to start and tied the game at two goals each when Michael Roby scored on the assist from Dylan Young. That would not last however as the Golden Flyers once again took the lead back less than six minutes later. That would be all the scoring in the second period as the Golden Flyers took a 3-2 lead into the final period.
In the third, the Cougars and Golden Eagles played an even period and neither team could find the back of the net. That was until the Cougars went on a power play with three minutes left in the game. This time it was Bekk McClaine scoring the power play goal on the assists from Zack Conner and Kadsen Johnson. It was not easy sailing to overtime for the Cougars however as they had to try and kill a penalty with less than three minutes left in the period. Even though the Golden Flyers put four shots on goal during the power play, the Cougars were able to successfully kill the opportunity and the game headed back into overtime.
The Cougars entered this overtime for the third time in four games. As had been done before, Nick Cyprian sent the Cougars home happy when he scored on a power play a minute-and-a-half into the overtime period. He was assisted by Conner and Kyle Contessa. This was the third overtime game winner of the last two weeks for Cyprian. The Cougars won by a final of 4-3 and swept the weekend series where they never led in either game.
The Cougars were led offensively by Conner who had two assists and Cyprian who scored the winner. Defensively, Camden Smith made four blocks to assist his goalie Geno Pichora. Pichora, in his second game in net of the weekend made 38 saves which gave him a .927 save rate.
The Cougars will be back in action on February 7th at 7 PM when they host the top five nationally ranked Utica Pioneers for a two game weekend set.
