Gatewood's Hat-Trick Leads No. 4 SUNY Geneseo to 5-2 Victory Over SUNY Brockport

GENESEO, NY - The SUNY Geneseo Men's Hockey Team took down UCHC rival Brockport 5-2 on Saturday Night at the Ira S. Wilson Arena. Payne Gatewood tucked three away goals to help bolster the Ice Knights to an 18-2-1 overall record and 14-1-1 mark in conference play.  

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • The Ice Knights dominated the first period, tallying three goals while keeping the Gold Eagles scoreless. Payne Gatewood redirected Giuseppe Fiorillo's shot into the back of the net for the first. Diarmad DiMurro with the secondary assist on the goal. Captain Peter Morgan scored on the power play at 14:36, assisted by Sean Melso and Luke Panchisin. Gatewood added another tally at 15:49, assisted by Carter Diceman.  

  • The Golden Eagles scored at 7:53 in the second period at even strength. Gatewood scored his third of the night to complete the hattrick at 15:53 and extend the Ice Knights' lead back to three. Jack McDonald set up the goal with a drop pass and Diceman added the secondary assist on the play.  

  • Geneseo their strong play in the third. Sean Melso converted a rebound from Nathan Stachowiak's shot at 16:48 in the period to give Geneseo a 5-1 lead. Brockport added a tally in the final 20 seconds of play to make the final; Geneseo 5, Brockport 2.  

QUICK FACTS:  

  • First-year forward Payne Gatewood scored his first collegiate hat trick during the win.  

  • Sophomore goaltender Jacob Torgner started in the net for Geneseo and recorded 17 saves on 19 shots with a .895 save percentage.  

  • Geneseo outshot Brockport 49-19 and won the faceoff battle 36-27 through three periods.
