GENESEO, NY - The second-seeded SUNY Geneseo Men's Ice Hockey Team advanced past the No. 3 seed Manhattanville Valiants with a 5-2 win in the UCHC Semifinals on Saturday night. The Ice Knights will take on Utica in the final on Saturday, March 8, in Utica at 7 p.m.
Geneseo improved to 21-4-1 while Manhattaville finished its season with a 10-16-1 mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first period of play saw multiple-scoring chances for each team. The Ice Knights lit the lamp at 10:56 on the powerplay. Robert Gatewood connected with Nicholas Kovacs before finding Zach Purcell for a one-timer that found the back of the net. The next goal came shortly after the first at 15:24, Jack McDonald set up Peter Morgan, who juked out the goaltender before putting the puck away.
- The Valiants added goals at 11:31 and 16:25 in the second to tie the game. Geneseo responded just over two minutes after Manhattanville's second at 18:27. Bryce Howard snapped a wrist shot into the top left corner to retake the lead. Nicholas Kovacs and Sterling Wolters were credited with assists on the goal.
- Morgan blasted a slapshot past the opposition's goaltender on the powerplay 2:36 into the third to extend the lead. Nicholas Kovacs and Luke Panchisin with the helpers on Morgan's second goal. The Ice Knights put the icing on the cake with a Filip Wiberg open-net goal at 18:16 to add the fifth and final tally. Carter Diceman and Peter Morgan with assists on the empty-netter.
QUICK FACTS:
- Senior goaltender Adam Harris started in net and made 34 saves on 36 shots for a .944% save percentage.
- Peter Morgan and Nicholas Kovacs led the game with three points each.
- Geneseo tallied 47 shots on goals and Manhattanville tallied 36.
