WILKES-BARRE, PA – The penalty-kill unit and the power-play made the difference as the No. 13 Wilkes University men's ice hockey team outlasted Arcadia University 4-2 in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC)action at the Toyota SportsPlex on Saturday evening. The power-play unit converted at 25 percent (two-for-eight) while the penalty kill unit was a perfect six-for-six.
The Colonels improved to 5-0 in league play and 8-0 overall with the victory.
The powerplay unit took advantage of a two-minute minor for hooking called on the Knights when Michael Gurska got Wilkes on the board just nine seconds into the man-up opportunity with assists from Tyler Barrow and Cole Jungwirth at 6:00 of the first.
Arcadia responded at 8:54 of the first with an even-strength tally to tie the score as the first horn sounded to a 1-1 tie.
Phil Erickson put the Colonels back on top at 13:12 of the second with a helper from Devon Schell with Wilkes holding a 2-1 advantage through 40 minutes.
The Knights tied the score again at 2:32 of the third before Ben Stefanini put the Colonels ahead for good just 26 seconds later with a goal assisted by Tyson Araujo. Dylan Kuipers added an insurance goal on the powerplay at 12:20 of the third with assists from Taylor Brierley and Tyler Dill.
Michael Paterson-Jones earned the win, stopping 23-of-25 shots. Fletcher Bolda stopped 41-of-45 shots that Wilkes put his way.
The Colonels return to action on December 2
nd when they will host Nazareth College for a 7:30 p.m. UCHC contest.
