Masterful First Period Propels Mustangs to Road Win at Chatham

PITTSBURGH, PA -- Stevenson men's hockey posted another lockdown defensive effort on its way to a 3-1 road win at Chatham to open UCHC play on Saturday afternoon.

Stevenson (2-0-1) received a pair of first-period goals from Austin Master, later adding to the lead in the second, while Ryan Kenny made 23 saves in net. Chatham (0-1-0) was playing in its season opener, striking on the power play with just about five minutes remaining in the contest.

  • Kenny stood tall in the early going as Stevenson weathered an early storm from an energized Chatham team playing in its season opener.
  • The Mustangs began to tilt the ice in their favor as the period wore on.
  • Master got the Mustangs on the board, finishing off a goal from Blake Colman and Liam McCanney for his first marker of the season.
  • Stevenson kept up the pressure, notching another tally with time ticking away in the opening period. Anthony STarzi laid a pass across to Master, who snapped one home for a 2-0 advantage.

  • Stevenson went to the power play early in the second period, holding a large chunk of time in the offensive zone, but could not solve Chatham goalie Ricardo Gonzalez.
  • Evan Beers capped the scoring for the Mustangs, off assists from Eric Olson and Luke Benitez, with just about five minutes left in the period.
  • The Cougars had one final push as Kenny made a pair of saves, while Colman stepped in for a big shot block.
  • Stevenson pressed forward near the waning moments of the period, taking a 3-0 edge into the second intermission.

  • The Mustangs continued to hold the puck for a large portion of the period, limiting the opportunities Chatham had to climb back into the contest.
  • Chatham scored early on a power-play chance as Zack Connor made it a 3-1 game at the 15:08 mark of the period.
  • Stevenson held off Chatham for the remaining few minutes to secure the victory.

  • The Mustangs went nearly 57% from the faceoff dot on the day, winning 37 of 65 chances. Mac Lowry went 10-16 in the faceoff circle for Stevenson.
  • Stevenson also held a 30-24 edge in shots.
  • The Mustangs have allowed just two goals over the past two games, both victories.
  • Master registered his second consecutive multi-point game for the Mustangs on Saturday, now with 10 for his career.

  • Stevenson: The Mustangs return to the ice for their 2021-22 home opener, facing Nazareth on Friday, November 12 at 7:00 PM.
