WILKES-BARRE, PA – Two goals in the third period were not enough as the No. 7 Wilkes University men's ice hockey team fell 4-3 to SUNY Cortland in non-conference action from the Toyota SportsPlex on Tuesday evening.
The Colonels fell to 9-3-0 on the season while Cortland improved to 10-5-1.
Jay Gallagher got Wilkes on the board at 7:44 of the first period with an assist from Tyler Dill.
The Red Dragons tied the score at 9:09 of the first before finding the back of the net three times in the second to lead 4-1 after two periods.
Phil Erickson closed the gap to 4-2 at 5:26 of the third with an assist from Donald Flynn before Dill made the score 4-3 with helpers coming from Michael Gurska and Erickson at 19:12 of the third, but the Colonels were unable to complete the comeback.
Luc Fox stopped 21 shots in his first career start. Owen Zdunski made 31 saves for Cortland.
Flynn won 19-of-25 face-offs for Wilkes.
The Colonels return to the ice on Friday when they travel to Stevenson University for a 7:00 p.m. United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) contest.
