ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Host Nazareth hung tough Tuesday against second-ranked Geneseo in a non-conference men's hockey game, but the Golden Flyers' effort ultimately fell short in a 3-2 defeat to the Knights at Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.
The Golden Flyers received goals from Cole Moore and Grant Gallo, but dropped to 4-9-1 overall. Geneseo, ranked second by USCHO.com, is 13-1-1 overall with its second win over the season over the Golden Flyers.
Geneseo took the lead in the first two minutes on a goal by Henry Cleghorn, but Nazareth took advantage of a second-period power play to tie the score at 1-1 at 10:06. Moore scored his third goal of the season on a shot from the left point that found the upper right corner of the goal. Nick Charron and Ethan Louisos gained the assists.
The Knights regained the lead at 12:00 as Dan Bosio redirected a rebound of a shot that was initially saved by Nazareth goaltender Matt Sayles.
Geneseo scored again at 6:00 of the third period, but Gallo kept Nazareth competitive with his first goal of the season at 17:52 with Joseph Schaefer picking up the assist.
Nazareth sent Sayles to the bench in the closing minutes in favor of an extra skater in an effort to get the equalizing goal, but that hope ended when Moore was penalized for tripping at 19:14.
Geneseo had a 25-21 edge in shots on goal. Sayles played well in goal, making 22 saves.
The Golden Flyers play their next four games on the road, starting with a United Collegiate Hockey Conference game at Neumann Saturday at 4 p.m. Nazareth also visits Mahnattanville Sunday at 4.
