Nazareth skates past Neumann, 4-1

Golden Flyers (5-9-1 overall) visit Manhattanville Sunday

ASTON, PA – Visiting Nazareth scored three unanswered goals over the second and third periods Saturday to break away from a 1-1 tie as the Golden Flyers defeated Neumann in men's hockey, 4-1.

Nazareth improved to 5-9-1 overall and 3-4-0 in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference. Neumann is 5-8-1 and 1-5-1.

Freshman Joseph Schaefer scored his first and second career goals for the Golden Flyers, including an empty-netter in the closing second. Freshman twins Anthony and Liam Quinlivan also scored for the Golden Flyers, who have won two of their last three games.

Schaefer's first goal cam at 14:19 of the opening period to give the Golden Flyers a 1-0 advantage. Ethan Louisos and Henry McKinney assisted. Neumann tied the score just over three minutes later and the score stayed deadlocked through the end of the opening period.

Liam Quinlivan's goal proved to be the game-winner and came unassisted at 10:08. He blocked a shot at the opposing blue line, then skated past the Neumann defenders and fired a shot into the top right corner for a 2-1 lead.

Anthony Quinlivan followed suit at 16:24 with a back-breaking insurance goal that came on a Neumann power play. Nazareth's Ryan Turse was whistled for holding at 14:45, but Anthony broke free near the red line and took a pass from Liam and scored off the semi breakaway to give Nazareth a 3-1 advantage.

The score went unchanged until the Knights pulled their goaltender in favor of an extra skater in the closing minutes and Schaefer answered with his second goal of the game at 18:45 to seal the deal.

Neumann had a 33-25 edge in shots on goal, but Nazareth freshman Matt Sayles was strong for the Golden Flyers in making 32 saves.

Nazareth plays again Sunday at Manhattanville at 4 p.m.
