WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Wilkes University Colonels men's ice hockey squad hosted the King's College Monarchs at the Toyota SportsPlex Friday evening for their second game of the 2021-2022 season.
The Colonels (13-3, 9-1), ranked no. 8 in the latest USCHO.com Division III poll, blew past their United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) rival King's (3-14, 2-8) 8-1, with five different Colonels netting goals.
Sophomore Jimmy O'Kane started the scoring with the lone first goal period from either squad at 11:25 with assists from seniors Michael Gurska and Nick Fea. The Colonels poured it on with four second period goals, with senior Jay Gallagher starting the barrage at 4:21 with help from senior Dylan Kuipers. Fea tacked on his first of four with help from O'Kane at 5:25, before senior Tyler Barrow buried a power play goal into the upper right corner of the King's net with help from senior Donald Flynn and Gurska at 7:26. Fea wrapped up the scoring in the period at 10:22 with assists from Taylor Brierley and Kuipers.
King's notched their lone goal at 15:31, but the Colonels went back to work in the third perio. Fea scored twice more with goals at 1:01 and 6:21 into the period. O'Kane and Gurska helped on the first one, while Gurska and Barrow helped Fea put home a power play goal for the second. Sophomore Jack Lane finished the scoring at 13:16 with an assist from senior Phil Erickson.
The Colonels outshot the Monarchs 41-21, with senior Nico Pidro recording 20 saves in the victory. The Colonels won 60 percent (39-of-65) of the faceoffs on the evening. Fea's four goals was his career high, while his five points was his season high.
The Colonels take their four-game winning streak to Stevenson, Md. to take on the Stevenson Mustangs on Wednesday. Puck drop is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in a series that is tied at four wins apiece.
