GLENSIDE, PA – Sophomore Logan Tobias scored both goals as the Nazareth University Men's Hockey team recorded a 2-2 tie against Arcadia University in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Friday night match-up. After two scoreless overtime periods, the Golden Flyers picked up the extra point in the standings with a victory in the shootout.
Coming off a 5-1 win at home last week, the Golden Flyers (1-2-1 overall, 1-0-1 UCHC) were hungry to continue their success and quickly capitalized on a powerplay opportunity four-and-a-half minutes into the game. Tobias netted his first goal of the night and was assisted by linemates sophomore Blake Frost and freshman Will Halecki.
In the second period, Tobias scored his second goal of the game, unassisted, just under three minutes into the period to give Nazareth the 2-0 lead.
The Knights (1-3-1, 0-2-1 UCHC) were able to strike back on the powerplay late in the period.
The third period began with Nazareth holding the 2-1 lead and remained that way until the last minute of play. In a last-ditch effort, Arcadia pulled its goalie with 20 seconds left in the game for the extra skater. With less than one second left in the period, the Knights scored to force the overtime periods.
Each team fought hard to obtain the extra point for an overtime win, but despite multiple goal-scoring opportunities, overtime passed with no goals and the game continued tied 2-2 to a shootout for a point a piece.
Tobias opened the second round with a five-hole goal, and the Golden Flyers now had a 1-0 advantage in the shootout. Raphael Provencher made the stop on the second Arcadia attempt and after another save for the Arcadia goalie, Provencher clinched the shootout win with his third save.
The Golden Flyers look to close out their away trip tomorrow as they face Arcadia again to complete the weekend series.
