UTICA, NY - The No. 1 Utica University men's hockey team beat King's College 11-1 with an incredible 80 shots on Friday evening. The win improves the team to a perfect 15-0-0 in UCHC play while extending its winning streak to 10 games.
Regen Cavanagh registered a hat trick on the evening which turned out to be his second consecutive hat trick against King's. Chris Carroll sent in a pair to the back of the net for the first and second career goals of his career. Jayson Dobay, Matt Wood, Lucas Herrmann, Kimball Johnson, Remy Parker and Brandon Osmundson each had a goal as well.
Mic Curran was a focal point on the offensive end as well as he assisted on three goals. Brian Scoville, Khristian Acosta and Jakob Breault also had multi-assist nights. Justin Allen assisted on one goal tonight to bring his career mark to 98 as he nears becoming the first defenseman in program history to record 100 career points.
In goal, Bryan Landsberger notched a clean sheet on 11 saves in his two periods of play. Avery Sturtz went between the pipes for the third period and made four saves.
Beyond outshooting the Monarchs 80-16, the Pioneers also controlled 50 of 69 faceoffs led by Dante Zapata's 17 wins, Cavanagh's 12 and Hermann's 10.
The Pioneers were very aggressive to start the game as the team put up 22 shots in the first period. Connor Federok and Kimball Johnson led the way with three shots each and Johnson hit the post on two attempts from the blue line. Regen Cavanagh put Utica up 1-0 as the team was able to use nifty passing to capitalize on the power play. The goal came at the 4:19 mark and was assisted by Justin Allen and Jacob Breault. The Pioneers continued to rifle away shots but did not score again and took a 1-0 edge into the first intermission.
Utica continued its high shot output with 30 shots and a whopping seven goals in the second period. Regen Cavanagh scored at the 6:00 mark and was assisted by Brian Scoville and Brandon Osmundson. Kimball Johnson scored at the 7:50 mark and John Mocovich and Buster Larsson assisted the goal. At the 12:37 mark Lucas Herrmann found the back of the net from passes by Remy Parker and Mic Curran. Just two minutes later at the 14:33 mark Chris Carroll rifled one into the net and Matt Wood and Jacob Breault assisted the play. Jayson Dobay scored at the 16:25 mark and Lucas Herrmann and Mic Curran assisted the play with beautiful passes. Regen Cavanagh secured his hat trick by scoring at the 16:41 mark and Khristian Acosta assisted the goal. The team finished off its rout with Matt Wood finding the back of the net and Jaxon Rutkowski assisted the play.
King's was on the board at the 2:30 mark of the third period as Luke Babilon found the back of the net. Yet, Utica responded as just over two minutes later at the 4:47 mark Remy Parker found the back of the net and Mic Curran and Brian Scoville assisted the goal. Brandon Osmundson scored at the 13:33 mark and was assisted by Khristian Acosta. The Pioneers final goal of the game was scored by Chris Carroll and assisted by Jayson Dobay. Utica won 11-1 in dominating fashion and plenty of players recorded a point on the night.
No. 1 Utica (17-2-1, 15-0-0 UCHC) and King's College meet again on Saturday, February 4 at 2 p.m. for Northern Safety & Industrial Night and the Pioneers' regular season home finale.
