Pittsburgh, PA (Jan. 12, 2024) - Frazer Dodd scored the game-winner in overtime as Alvernia University defeated Chatham University 3-2 on Friday night in UCHC men's ice hockey action at Chatham.
The Cougars scored the 2-2 equalizer with just over a minute to play to force overtime. But, Alvernia still came away with the win following the game-winner from Dodd.
With the win, Alvernia improves to 9-5-1 overall and 7-4 in UCHC play. The Cougars drop to 5-8 overall and 4-7 in UCHC action.
How it Happened
- Alvernia got on the board midway through the first period as Logan vande Meerakker found the back of the net for the fourth straight game to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead. Isaac Chapman and Andrew Deschenese recorded the assists on the goal.
- Alvernia held Chatham to just two shots on goal in the period as Alvernia took the 1-0 lead into the second frame.
- The Golden Wolves took a 2-0 lead as vande Meerakker scored his second of the night, this time off the assist of Vincent Servizzi to give Alvernia the 2-0 lead.
- Alvernia's two goal advantage lasted just 15 seconds as Chatham got one back to make it a 2-1 game with 13:15 to play in the period.
- The Cougars and Golden Wolves played even through the rest of the period and Alvernia killed off a late penalty to take a 2-1 advantage into the final frame.
- Both teams traded power play opportunities during the first half of the third period, but neither team could convert.
- With Alvernia on a power play opportunity with just under three minutes to play, the Golden Wolves seemed poised to come away with the 2-1 win. But, down a man, the Cougars went empty net and the gamble paid off as Nick Cyprian scored the late equalizer for the Cougars with 1:10 to play in regulation.
- Neither team took a shot on goal through the remainder of regulation as the game headed to overtime.
- Alvernia sent in three shots on goal through the first minute of overtime, but did not break through.
- Following a turnover by Chatham, Alvernia set it up and brought the puck down the ice. Hunter Alden took it behind the net and fired a pass over to Dodd off the left post. Dodd quickly tipped it in for the 3-2 game-winner. Alvernia did not allow a shot in overtime.
