RYE, NY – Manhattanville University women's ice hockey celebrated its first victory of the season over Hood College 3-1 to split the opening weekend series.
Ali Joly and Colby Cantor scored their first goals of the season for the Valiants while Emma Sulpher netted her first career. Olivia Cimorelli posted a 97.2 save percentage with 35 saves, including 10 saves during the opposing team's power plays. Danielle Stadler earned her second assist in as many days, finding Joly early in the second period to put the Vals up after the first-period drought.
Halfway through the period, the Valiants extended its lead after Jada Mackinnon wrapped the cage, sent the puck to Cantor, who put it on Sulpher's stick to finish it into the back of the net.
With two minutes left in the final period, the Blazers pulled its goalkeeper for the advantage on the ice. Just thirty seconds away from the shutout, they were able to find their way around Cimorelli for the lone goal of the game.
Taking advantage of the empty net, Cantor intercepted the puck from the offense to carry it up the ice and score the cushioning third goal of the game for her team.
In the stat sheet for the Valiants, Harper Weisbeck led the team with two assists. Cantor led the offensive efforts with seven shots on goal, while Danika Aubin fronted the defense, putting herself in front of four shots. Erin Flaherty was close behind with three blocks while Cantor stopped two. Joly, Mackinnon, and Abby Kauffman were threats in the circle, winning nine, seven, and six faceoffs, respectively.
The Blazers were highlighted by the Hail Mary goal from Ella Phillips, the 16 faceoff wins from Mia Cheesebrough, and the 33 saves from Claire Hill.
