Canton, N.Y. – The Elmira College women's ice hockey team continued its season-opening road trip Saturday afternoon, traveling to SUNY Canton for a non-conference matchup with the Kangaroos. Mo McBride recorded her second consecutive multi-goal game, while Olivia Last recorded a shutout to lead the Soaring Eagles to a 2-0 victory, improving their record to 2-0 on the season.

McBride led the way for EC with both goals, bringing her season total to six through the opening two games. Georgia MacInnis, Anna Lugge, and Piper Thompson each recorded an assist, while Last turned aside all 12 shots she faced to earn the shutout.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Soaring Eagles and Kangaroos traded opportunities in the opening period, with Last making an early save to keep the hosts off the scoreboard. Elmira earned its first power-play opportunity midway through the frame and generated two shots on goal, but the Canton netminder was up to the task. EC continued to search for the breakthrough, but neither side could find the back of the net as the teams entered the first intermission scoreless. Elmira held a narrow 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Elmira came out firing in the second period, testing the Canton netminder with several early opportunities. The Soaring Eagles finally broke through just under seven minutes into the frame, as McBride pounced on a loose puck during a scramble in front of the net and buried a backhand effort to give EC a 1-0 advantage. MacInnis picked up the assist on the play. Elmira continued to control the pace, generating several scoring chances as the period progressed. With just under four minutes remaining, both teams were assessed hooking penalties, resulting in four-on-four play. Neither side could capitalize, and the Soaring Eagles carried a 1-0 lead into the second intermission after dominating the middle frame with a 15-1 advantage in shots on goal.

The Kangaroos earned an early power-play opportunity in the third period, but the Soaring Eagles successfully killed off the penalty behind a save from Last. Just 30 seconds after returning to full strength, McBride doubled Elmira's advantage, making a beautiful move around a Canton defender before firing a shot glove-side into the back of the net. Lugge and Thompson recorded assists on McBride's sixth goal of the season. Canton earned another power-play opportunity shortly after, but EC's penalty kill stood strong once again. The Soaring Eagles continued to apply pressure offensively, while Last turned aside seven shots in the final frame. The Kangaroos pulled their netminder in the closing minutes in search of a late goal, but Elmira held firm defensively to secure the 2-0 victory and complete a perfect opening weekend.
